Churning Australian Markets

The Australian market continues to churn posting lackluster returns of 5.16% year to date. Our model portfolio is having a tougher year, after a great FY2026. This month was down again relative to benchmark, and we are lagging -5.76% for the year.

It has been a volatile second half for resources stocks.

The bulk of the recent market reaction seems to be driven by lower iron ore prices and fears of a falling lithium price. Copper prices remain heavily bid, and hovering near all-time highs. Our portfolios are neutral on resources, and tilted towards gold, copper, uranium and battery minerals. We will sit tight on this latest move as real weakness seems more likely in the domestic economy.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is likely to raise rates by another 25bps next Tuesday, 3rd November, which is also the US Midterm Election day.

Crude oil prices remain high, so we see no immediate let up to inflation pressures nor any reason to sell down electrification exposures in copper and lithium.
